Many moons ago on a clear day high above the fabled water of the Douglass Hills Swim Club I was born in mid-air as my mom and dad were skydiving. Not really, I was born in Louisville, KY in July of 1971. I grew up in the enchanted land of Douglass Hills, wrestling brown bears and flossing my teeth with the whiskers of saber-toothed lions I bested in daily skirmishes. Not really, I grew up in Douglass Hills, attended Crosby and Eastern, graduated from the University of Kentucky and today teach AP Psychology at Eastern High School, coach the Eastern High School Swim Team and sell real estate for Stonelake Realtors. When not wrestling bears and lions I spend time with my awesome family—my wife Erin and my boys Austin and Travis. They get to partake in my favorite of all past times, helping coach the Hurricanes of Douglass Hills. I’ve been on the warpath with this team since I was 7 years old—and it never gets old, coaching with my good friend Leigh-Ann. I am also a complete geek for University of Kentucky sports teams, the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, when I’m not out lassoing Unicorns. See you on the deck of the Douglass Hills Swim Club—I’ll be the one with claw marks on my back.
Yes, the rumors are all true: I was born and raised here in KY. I have been coaching for over 25 years. I have coached every level of swimmer, even Coach T.J. in his “glorious” butterfly days. I swam in the Olympics during my college years at The University of Texas. I drink more diet coke than all the other coaches put together. (Yes, I got them Hooked. Proud sponsor of the Olympics! I should own stock.) I have been known to throw an occasional flip-flop at a swimmer-- in my earlier years. I travel from Nebraska each summer, where I now live; and drag my girls, Ashley and Kaitlyn, back “home” to this awesome team I’ve grown up on and truly love. (Don’t worry parents: husband, Mike, will be back to m.c. the Friday night pep rally before Champs!!)…
Can’t wait for this next roller coaster ride to begin. Go Hurricanes!!
Born on the banks of the Ohio River on a cold, foggy morning of March 21st a long, long time ago. My name is T.J. Lechner, I have been associated with Douglass Hills for 24 years (swam for 13, and this will be my 11th season of coaching). I am known for being goofy, "beardful" (it's a word I made up for myself due to my ability to have such awesome facial hair…see picture), and passionate more than most about Douglass Hills. Douglass Hills is my lifelong love. So is teaching, mentoring, and coaching the kids/swimmers on the team. I also coach throughout the winter. Can't wait to see the gates open for another season! Lets Go DH! #hurricanepride
Hi! My name is Julia and I am so excited to be back for another summer with Douglass Hills. I’ve been on the team since I was 8 years old, and this will be my 4th season coaching. I just graduated from the University of Kentucky in May (what??!) with a B.A. in English and will return to UK in the fall for my Master's in Teaching. l. And then I'll see what's next. Hopefully a high school English classroom of my own! And while I love school, I'm happy to finally be done with my undergraduate work, and I am so ready for another summer full of cool morning practices, late-night swim meets, afternoon thunderstorms, kids complaining of the cold, coaches complaining of the cold, sunburns, sandal tans, dinners at Roosters, those unbelievable DH sunsets, and hanging out with my favorite group of people. DH, it’s good to be back. I can’t wait to see you and give you a big 'ole hug.
Hey guys! My name is Salem and I'm beyond thrilled to be joining everyone on the pool deck for another fun swim season. I have been spending my summers with DH for 16 years now and this will be my 3rd year coaching. This past May, I graduated from Bellarmine University with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education and have recently accepted a position with Jefferson County Public Schools. I can’t believe I will have a classroom of my own in August! I am beyond excited to be on the pool deck coaching again with my best friends and spending the next 8 weeks with the coolest families around. DH is truly the best place to spend my never-ending, best summers ever, and I am so excited to be back. I can’t wait to see you all and share many incredible memories this summer. Go Hurricanes!
20 long years ago, on the night of the first quarter moon in the month of March, I was brought into this world for one purpose, and one purpose only: to be a part of the best summers ever on the Douglass Hills Swim Team. In my early years, I was nurtured in the fertile lands of Douglass Hills, but was forced against my will to move to—dare I say it—Plainview. However, despite my new location, I remained loyal to my homeland, where I swam for 15 years. I also helped coach the youngsters on the team for the past two years, but this will be my first year as a true DH coach. I went to St. X in high school, and I just finished my second year at UK where I’m majoring in mechanical engineering (Go Cats). I work as a lifeguard after swim practices are over. I love Douglass Hills and all its swimmers more than anything, and I can’t wait to have a great summer with these awesome kids and coaches!
